Understanding RSS Feeds For Content Syndication

RSS Feeds Get The Word Out!

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feeds confuse a lot of people despite their name. But they actually can provide bloggers with a couple of big advantages for very little work.

Syndicate Content: If your blogging software or article directory produces a feed, you can submit it to lots of free RSS feed directories. Why do this?

  • You will have automatic backlinks to your most recent posts when the feeds are listed on the directories.
  • Other webmasters, who want content, may use your feeds. This means you will even have more exposure and backlinks.
  • If you use some Web 2.0 sites to help promote your main website, you can use your own feeds on your page. This helps you produce content for your Web 2.0 pages, and it helps you give instant exposure to your latest articles! Examples of these services are Squidoo and Hub Pages.  Here is a Squidoo page on earning money writing.  Here is an example of a Hub Page on getting Published Online. I have included these so you can see how the author used these Web 2.0 services to help promote their own online properties.

Note: A backlink, by the way, is simply a link from another website to your site. We will discuss the importance of backlinks in another post.

Get Content: Many webmasters and news site owners use RSS feeds in order to provide constantly updated content for their own sites.  As a site owner, you always want fresh articles or news, and this is a simple way to get it. Some article directories, like Publish Myself provide a vareity of RSS feeds in many topics. There are many ways to include the content from feeds on your website, and you can research the correct way to use them on your own pages.

What Are RSS Feeds?

Now that you know a little bit about what content syndication is good for, you can begin to understand exactly what they are.  It is a simple format for publishing web content that can be read by browsers.  For example, this is the Writing Money RSS Feed.

How Can You Make A Feed?

You should not need to know the mechanics of producing a feed. Popular blogging software, like WordPress, will automatically produce one. Many other popular CMS or website scripts will also do this, and you can also find stand-alone scripts to help you. In addition, if you submit your articles to popular article directories, they will also give you an author or topic feed you may use.
